Discover the ease and freedom of off-loom weaving! In this two-hour workshop, instructor Jessica Holton will guide you through a shared pattern while educating about the history and mental health benefits of weaving. All materials will be provided!
After a brief overview of the history of weaving both on and off-loom, Jessica will guide all attendees through the same pattern to get everyone acquainted with this new skill. Each participant will learn how to begin their pattern on a 5-inch by 5-inch piece of wood (without pegs or grooves), using a tapestry needle for the shuttle. Along the way, participants will be introduced to the mental health benefits of weaving.
Jessica Holton is a clinical social worker who began her fiber arts journey in September 2022, when she took a drop-spindle fiber spinning class. She began weaving on a tapestry loom in October 2022, taught herself to knit in December 2022, and attended her first (virtual) off-loom weaving workshop in February 2023. She won Best of Show for an off-loom piece at the 2023 Flagstaff Wool and Fiber Festival, and another piece was displayed at the Coconino Center for the Arts as part of their Form and Fiber: Handmade Textile Art exhibit in 2025.
